One of my seminal influences was a 1981 book by Richard Whelan titled Double Take: A Comparative Look at Photographs. Whelan explores the aesthetics and history of photography by showing images of similar subjects as interpreted by various artists. Not only did this provide me with a grounding in the medium, it also gave me an idea that would bear fruit decades later. These pictures simulate the actual works, which are photographs placed in a taupe double-mat.
